Vardo’s and the traveling home for your Miniatures

What Vardo should I choose for my miniatures?

That’s a great question. Each Miniatures Vardo is sized with you in mind. It’s a tiny house for your miniatures to live in. We have several styles for you to choose from for your miniatures storage solution. We also offer several that can be used to transport your painting supplies.

Vardo Name, Sizes and Function

When we decided to use Vardo types to describe our Corrugated Miniatures Storage Solution we really wanted to consider what each wagon was like, and determine if it matched the storage solution. We have two sizes that we make the corrugated for and the foam. Because these are our standard offerings, with one begin 2″ tall and the other being 4″ tall. We wanted these to be the most common type of Vardo. Naturally that meant The Reading Vardo and the Burton. The smaller one being the Reading.

Gypsy Reading Vardo - Miniatures Storage Solution

Reading Vardo (19″ x 9″ x 2″) – Miniatures Storage Solution

The Reading Vardo is the second most spacious Gypsee Wagon. These wagons were named Reading Wagons because of the location where they were made, Reading England. They also were named Kites because of their design, because the top angled in towards the wheels giving them a kite-like appearance. Now ours isn’t kite shaped but it’s the smaller of our long hobby storage boxes, which is why we’ve named it the Reading Vardo.

Gypsee Wagon Pot-Cart Paint Storage Solution

Pot-Wagon (19″ x 9″ x 2″) – Paint Storage Solution

Our interpretation of the pot wagon translates well as this design converts our Reading Vardo into a Paint Storage Case, a place to store your hobby Paint-Pots when you travel. These also make an excellent paint sorting device. These are offered in 32mm (Privateer Press Paint Pots), 35mm (Games Workshop Paint Pots), 40mm (Short) [Secret Weapon 40mm Paint Pots], and 40mm (Tamiya Paints, or Mr. Color Paints).

History of the Pot-Wagon – A moving pottery shop

After World War I many wagon makers turned to manufacturing motorized vehicles. Not so with the Wright Brothers. The Wright Brothers built the elaborate Potters’ carts called Pot-Wagons. Travelers hawked potter-ware from these two, or four, wheeled; lightweight; richly embellished; “shops”. Hoops and canvas sheets fitted halfway along the bed, this ’tilt’ converted it to an extra sleeping-room. A refinement was a bed-box with hoops, which, when covered with canvas, was in fact a barrel shaped four-poster bed. As well as being placed on the Pot-Cart, this could be placed on the ground. This was known as the York accommodation, or the “Accommodation Cart”, an up to the minute variation of the very first horse-drawn sleeping cart. Later, the openwork or spindle sides were built of less drafty matchboard. A later development was the Yorkshire Bow, or Yorkshire Open-Lot. This was so successful that they can still be found on the roads today. Man, as Nature, sometimes manages to create a perfect design.

Gypsee Wagon Ledge Wagon - Paint Storage Solution

Ledge Wagon (19″ x 9″ x 4″) – Paint Storage Solution

Our interpretation of the Ledge Wagon translates well as this design converts our Burton Vardo into a Paint Storage Case, a place to store your hobby Paint-Pots when you travel. These also make an excellent paint sorting device. These are offered in 25mm, 32mm (Privateer Press Paint Pots), 35mm (Games Workshop Paint Pots), 40mm (Short) [Secret Weapon 40mm Paint Pots], and 40mm (Tamiya Paints, or Mr. Color Paints).

History of the Ledge Wagon – Wider living space

This wagon was traditionally cottage shaped, designed to reflect a living space more than a mobile home. The roof was arched and offered a much more robust and spacious living area than what the other styles typically offered, the design features were slightly less lavish but more homely instead.

Gypsy Open-Lot Vardo - Blu Foam Storage Solution

Open-lot (26+3/8 Wide x 7+9/16 Deep x 2+5/8 Tall) – Blu Foam Storage

The Open-lot was incredibly similar to that of the Bowtop, however, rather than having a door at the entrance it featured a simple curtain.

Gypsy Bow-Top Vardo - Blu Foam Storage Solution

Bow-Top (26+3/8 Wide x 7+9/16 Deep x 4 5/16 Tall) – Blu Foam Storage

The Bow-Top wagon is possibly the most recognizable, and certainly the lightest of the styles. The classic curved design is one of its most distinctive features, alongside the fact that it was often painted or camouflaged with materials made from tones of green. This meant it easily blended into the woodland and could be hidden away when necessary.

Gypsy Showman Vardo - Blu Foam Storage Solution

Showman Wagon (13 5/16 Wide x 7 9/16 Deep x 9 3/8 Tall) – Blu Foam Storage

Agricultural living vans were plain, even when occupied by owner drivers. In contrast, showmen became known for their opulent and beautifully decorated wagons. These were distinguished by cut glass windows, lace curtains and even more engraved glass inside fronting display cabinets for china, ideally Royal Crown Derby.

Showman’s wagons are sought after today and are still used by new circus families
